23.13. How to redesignate a contribution from a previous election cycle.

If for any reason a contribution came in from a previous election cycle and then that contribution has to be redesignated to the next election, there is a data entry method to accomplish this task. We recommend consulting your FEC analyst if this is needed, but here are the steps to redesignate a contribution from a prior election cycle.

1. For the current reporting cycle, create a memo contribution with the date and election period of the original contribution from the previous election cycle. Save this transaction.

2. Create a second memo contribution, but make this amount negative with the same date and election period as the original contribution.

3. Create a third memo contribution - dated in the current reporting period with the current election period. Most importantly, the "Exempt Legal Memo" box must be checked to include the amount in the donor's election cycle to date totals.

4. Once all three memo contributions are created, this must be advanced linked to each other to properly align on the FEC report. This can be done by going to the first memo contribution... open it up and click linking > click advanced. And then go to the receipt box and type in the same record name, click the X records found > select the other memo contributions and then hit save. Repeat for the negative memo contribution and advance link the negative memo contribution to the original memo contribution.

5. After this data entry is complete, your report should have the original memo contribution dated in the prior election cycle. A negative memo contribution showing the redesignation of the funds, and then a positive memo contribution with the current election cycle date and the current election period.
